I get questions frequently about hair care and how I keep my beard looking so healthy. I have a few daily/weekly routines that I do. Weekly deep conditioning is definitely one of them. Because my beard is so long, there’s a good chance the ends could dry out and break easily. So I like to keep my beard saturated using a deep condition treatment about once every week or so.
There are different brands/treatments out there, so it takes some experimentation to figure out which one works best for my hair. I’m going to try different brands and write up a simple review for each one.
This week, OGX (Organix) Extra Strength, Argan Oil of Morocco Hydrate Mask (available at Target, Wal-Mart, Ulta, and online; $3.99).
To be honest I don’t know what they mean when they say a product repairs hair. Once it is damaged or breaking, that is it. You can’t unbreak it. However, you can saturate the hair so that it isn’t so dry to prevent future breakage. Let’s see how this particular conditioner works.
When applying a deep conditioner to your beard:
Step 1: wash beard thoroughly removing any beard oil build up, etc. Pat the beard to dry it a little, but leave damp. Do not blow dry.
Step 2: put on a shirt you don’t mind getting conditioner all over, or wrap a towel around your neck and shoulders like a barber’s smock. It’s going to be a little messy.
Step 3: open packet and put a good amount of conditioner in your hand and rub together.
Start applying it to the ends and tips of your beard first since this is the oldest and driest part of your facial hair. Then work your way up to the beard hair roots.
If you have a large beard, the packet will be empty at this point. If you have a smaller beard, you may be able to save what is left and use it again for another treatment later.
Leave the conditioner treatment in at least an hour. I prefer to leave mine in until it “dries”, which is generally 2 hours or so.
This particular brand and type of conditioner is thick and creamy. It barely has any scent to it at all which I like. I don’t like heavy fragrance with any deep conditioner because the smell can be overwhelming while it is processing.
It rinsed out well and left my beard feeling silky and smooth as promised. And like the package stated, it gave my beard extra body and waves. Nothing too dramatic, but it was a noticeable difference. It definitely saturated my beard well.
I give it a solid 4.5 whiskers out of 5.
Step 4: after your beard is rinsed out thoroughly, replenish your beard using your daily beard oil regimen. I prefer to use Pulpo Beard Oils because they are thick and will help keep your facial hair saturated to avoid breakage. And they have unique scents that I like!
